SCCYAA EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING
APRIL 10 , 2006
Attending: John Moran, Roberto Taddeo, Katherine Taddeo, Jim Bentz, Tricia Heinz, Susie Rose, Karen Smith, Laurie Maddox, Sonya Davis, and Gwen Schwab.
Call to Order by John Moran at 7:10 p.m.
Minutes of March 13, 2006 meeting approved.
New Business:
Para soccer-Taddeo. Para soccer will not be occurring at St. John the Baptist. Upon attending the para meetings it was found that there was no communication between the para soccer commissioner and other catholic schools. Consequently there were no other sign-ups from other schools. Therefore the SJB teams would have no one to compete against. There are 126 SJB students PreK-3 through 8th grade that have signed up for soccer. It has been proposed by Roberto Taddeo to hold an Eagle Soccer Academy. (A handout with all the particulars was distributed to the board members.) The camp will occur over a 5 week period, practices will occur 1 time a week and on Sundays there will be a mini-tournament with every child receiving a medal at the end. This will occur between May 7 and June 5. The Juan Diego high school coach, Mark Drown, and some of the high school soccer players will be assisting at the practices and refereeing as much as possible. A motion was made by Katherine Taddeo to approve plans for the Eagle Soccer Academy by SCCYAA; it was seconded by Susie Rose and was passed unanimously. Parents will be notified of the change pending approval by the SCCC.
Baseball Oversight-Moran. It was brought to the board’s attention the Rebecca Camera is not the baseball rep. She is the liaison with Hillcrest. It was also brought up that all of the baseball coaches need to complete the safe environment.
Boys Lacrosse-Maddox. It was brought to the attention of the board that the Utah Lacrosse Assn. has a grant program called Fields First Grants. The Juan Diego lacrosse team has applied for a grant to but fencing for the Northwest field, to keep ball from going into the road. So far they are the only ones that have applied for anything and ULA has $10,000 available. The question was does the youth lacrosse program want to apply for a grant to use for other things? The deadline for application is April 15, 2006. Laurie Maddox will acquire the specific paperwork required and speak with Nick Clark, who writes grants.
The draft is being held this week for the juniors. All players will know before spring break as to which team they are on.
The middle school girl’s lacrosse team will be practicing on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:45.
Middle School Cross Country-Joyce. A handout was given to all board members. Practices are on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:15-4:00, March through mid-May. Cost is $25, includes conference fees and t-shirt. The coach is Todd Holzhauser, the middle school contact is Carrie Joyce. They are part of the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) and is the only Catholic school participating in this conference. There will be 4 meets in April and May. There are currently 24 students signed up to compete.
Upcoming Sports:
Football Planning-Heinz. The youth football program is currently looking at changing from the UVFL to the Ute conference football league. John Colosimo is currently trying to get that change made. A committee is currently being assembled, headed by Larry Colosimo to expedite these changes. John Colosimo would also like the summer youth football camp to be posted on the SCCYAA website.
Other:
Tricia Heinz offered the board a photography bid sheet she devised. It is very well done and could be used for any sport. These will be made available to the coaches and other sports reps. Thank you Tricia.
